The layers of an astrolabe

An instrument with an identifiable maker

The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a brass astrolabe dated 690 AH, corresponding to 1291 CE, attributed by its inscription to the Rasulid prince Umar ibn Yusuf. The museum connects the object with a surviving scientific treatise describing this very instrument. This makes it possible to discuss a particular maker and documented object instead of an anonymous, timeless symbol of medieval science.

Astronomy in everyday and religious life

Observation of the sky served practical purposes. The positions of the sun and stars helped determine time, while astronomical knowledge also supported prayer schedules and the direction of Mecca. The Islamic lunar calendar gave observation of the moon another important role. These uses show why astronomy belonged within religious, intellectual and material life rather than outside it.

Every part, in words

  1. Mater. The body holds the instrument’s plates and provides its outer frame.

  2. Latitude plate. Real plates encode a sky projection for a latitude. The simple rings here do not reproduce that calibrated geometry.

  3. Rete. A real rete carries star pointers. This simplified framework rotates around the central pin without representing actual stars.
