Why it matters

The new physics enabled imaging, electronics and nuclear technologies while changing basic ideas about certainty and nature.

Three linked fields, several timelines

Röntgen’s 1895 X-ray work, Becquerel and the Curies’ radioactivity research, Planck’s 1900 quantum proposal and later quantum mechanics were distinct programmes. The 1927 endpoint marks a mature stage of debate, not the final completion of quantum physics.

Discovery brought benefit and exposure

X-rays rapidly enabled medical imaging, while early researchers and patients often faced poorly understood radiation risks. Radioactivity later supported medicine and nuclear technology. Instruments, laboratory workers, calibration and safety practices belong alongside named theorists in this history.
