London’s sanitation: waste, water and public works

Rapid urban growth overwhelmed older waste systems. London’s sewer works show how public health depended on engineering, finance and the work of maintenance.

The river became a sewer

Cesspits, street drainage and growing use of flushing toilets carried increasing waste into the Thames. The river also supplied drinking water. The hot summer of 1858 made the smell unbearable and accelerated political support for major works. The crisis exposed a city whose waste infrastructure had failed to keep pace with its population.

Intercepting and moving sewage

Joseph Bazalgette’s system used large intercepting sewers to carry waste eastward, with pumping stations lifting flows where gravity alone was insufficient. The project continued to 1875. This was a coordinated network rather than a single invention. The work changed where sewage was discharged; modern sewage treatment developed through further changes.

An everyday technology with a long history

Ancient societies had already developed drains, toilets and sewers. Victorian London therefore did not invent sanitation. Its experience instead shows how older practices were reorganised at metropolitan scale. Public investment, labour and continuing maintenance were as necessary as engineering design.
