The Green Revolution: IR8 rice, farming systems and uneven gains

The release of IR8 rice illustrates the Green Revolution’s promise of greater yields and the importance of water, inputs and access to technology.

Breeding for a different plant

The International Rice Research Institute released IR8 on 28 November 1966. The semi-dwarf variety became a landmark in rice improvement. Its history connects plant breeding to efforts to increase food production across Asia. The date marks one documented release within a longer transformation, not the invention of agriculture or the start of all crop improvement.

A seed works within a farming system

Improved varieties were part of a package that included fertiliser, irrigation and other changes in cultivation. Access to these inputs helped determine whether farmers could benefit. Yield comparisons must therefore specify growing conditions; an experimental result cannot automatically be treated as the outcome for every farm.

Production and environmental costs

FAO’s assessment emphasised both greater production and problems caused by poorly managed inputs. Fertiliser losses and pesticide contamination could damage soil, water and health. Evaluating agricultural change requires attention to who gained, which environments supported adoption and what costs accompanied higher output.
