Cell theory, neurons and modern physiology

A chain of claims, not one discovery

Schleiden and Schwann’s 1838–1839 formulations, later work on cell division and pathology, experimental physiology, and research on nervous tissue were related but distinct programmes. The displayed range links selected milestones without claiming that one paper established modern biology at once.

The 1906 prize marks debate as well as recognition

Golgi and Ramón y Cajal shared the 1906 Nobel Prize for work on the nervous system while defending different interpretations of neural organisation. The award is an institutional milestone, not proof that scientific disagreement ended or that unnamed laboratory workers and specimen sources were incidental.
