Why it matters
Its infrared instruments study early galaxies, star and planet formation, exoplanet atmospheres and Solar System objects. Webb complements rather than replaces other observatories, and its colour images are documented translations of measured wavelengths—not unaided human-eye views or photographs of the Big Bang.
