Different instruments, different milestones

Galileo used a telescope for astronomy in 1609; Hooke published Micrographia in 1665. Leeuwenhoek’s first published communication to the Royal Society followed in 1673. This survey extends to that later milestone rather than placing all three investigators’ work before 1665.

How observations became shareable evidence

Hooke described specimens, magnification and preparation as well as publishing enlarged illustrations. Such details let readers assess how an observation was made. Instrument makers, engravers and scientific correspondents helped make the new observations available beyond the person looking through a lens.
