Why it matters
The Bohemian revolt in 1618 expanded into a war involving multiple powers. Sweden supported Protestant forces, while Catholic France opposed the Habsburgs. Those alignments show why the conflict cannot be reduced to two consistently united religious camps.

They should not be treated as a single moment that invented every modern European state.
